The Week We Just Had
A huge blog update mainly taken from our other social media to save time...
Tuesday
Bom dia! Yesterday was a busy day for us. We picked up our cars that we will be using to drive around Curitiba. We had a meeting with Paloma from Impact Tours to discuss how tourists can offset their carbon footprint when they visit Brazil. It was very positive and also how local people will be helping tourists who will be helping local people in return. Definitely worth following the progress about how they are looking to help people and the planet.
We spoke to our taxi driver who was taking us to a meal only in Portuguese and what a guy he was. We explained in Portuguese what we were doing and he loved it. It was an honour for him to meet us. It really is quite surreal the appreciation you can receive even if you don't speak the same language!
We met with teachers from Maria Augusta Jouve to have a meal and they could speak with us in person. It's quite strange to meet when it has not been through email or Skype, but it was great even if our Portuguese is not quite good enough yet. The teachers explained that the children were very excited to meet us at the school and that we have become idols to them. It is very humbling (orgulhoso) to us since we never expected anything like this to happen. To be described as an idol is a huge honour and we look forward to arriving at the school.
Today another day that is likely to be busy, but exciting!
Wednesday
Today we had a meeting with the president of the Parana FA and the head of security for FIFA to talk about Lionsraw Brasil and it was very positive. It was also the first time to try a Churrascaria here in Brazil. Delicioso!
We collected some footballs from One World Football that we will use on projects around Curitiba. Craig also filmed a short piece that will be part of the Lionsraw social media in an area outside of the Centro.
Tonight we spent some time watching our first football game in Brazil as we watched Parana Clube in the Copa do Brasil. It was 3-1 to Parana and it had a cracking atmosphere. There was goals, a band, yellow cards and a red card. What an introduction!
Saturday
Today we met with a community group in Cajuru where there is the possibility to get involved with the local team who have a fantastic setup and facilities. They have even offered to sign us to their team!
Michael and the other volunteers visited Maria Augusta Jouve who had a community day at their school for young people to get involved in sports. We might even get an Easter egg off one of the pupils!
This afternoon we both spent time in Uberaba with Futebol da Rua. Great experience meeting the guys who run a successful project and the young people that access it.
It was also the first time for us to drive in Curitiba. It's different but we can get used to it.

Social Media at Prefeitura de Curitiba - What a team!
We met with the Prefeitura de Curitiba social media team and pictured with Marcos below.
We also met Roberlayne (the education secretary) and Gustavo Fruet the mayor of Curitiba. They welcomed us to the city and once again demonstrated the kindness Brazilian people have shown for the social project that started back in Newcastle. We appreciate the support that people have shown from 6000 miles away and followed our story with interest despite only knowing us the project.
Thank you very much for the support, the interest in creating positive environments for young people in Curitiba and welcoming two international guys to your city. Abraços!

Craig and Michael meet the Mayor of Curitiba
Today we had the pleasure to meet the Mayor of Curitiba, Gustavo Fruet. A fantastic welcome to the city that we will be based in this year.

Teach English language to students of Curitiba
Two young English city of Newcastle that are in Curitiba to participate in a project volunteer were gathered in this Tuesday (15) with the mayor Gustavo Fruet. The meeting at the office of the City the pair presented part of the schedule of actions that should be developed over the next few months in partnership with the Municipal Secretary of Education. Their goal is to teach the English language to needy children and be in Brazil during the period of the World Cup.
Craig Robson and Michael Gardner belong to international organization Lionsraw of football fans. Along with five other English will be for approximately one year in Curitiba.
Officially the first activity of the project for the teaching of language will happen on April 22. Will be a training involving the seven British volunteers and teachers municipal of five schools where the project will be involved. No meeting in the Center of Continuing Education of the Municipal Secretary of Education will be presented the didactic material prepared by British Institute that will be used in English classes with the students.
Although the Curitiba there is little more than a week Craig Robson and Michael Gardner already have friends in the city. Also know part of teachers and students with whom they will work. Since May of last year the double has participated in a cultural interchange involving five schools of municipal network of Curitiba with students and teachers of elementary school Holystone the city of Newcastle England.
The children of the two countries exchanged letters, photos, drawings and information about the culture sports and habits of each one. The rapprochement between the groups also happened through videoconferencing, recordings of songs and videos that showed the routines of children in their cities.
"We have great expectations for the beginning of the activities with the children, in particular with which we started contacts through cultural exchanges" said Michael Gardner. The British prepared themselves for the coming to Brazil. The pair learned Portuguese and second Craig enjoy the conviviality here to strengthen the new language. "It is not easy to learn the Portuguese, but we have made a concerted effort because we want to promote key exchanges for all the project" said Craig.
The municipal schools that are taking part in the project are Maria Augusta Jouve, Doutel de Andrade, Romario Martins, Francisco Frischmanns and the Unit of Integral Education Wenceslau Braz. The schools were chosen because they have the discipline of English in the curriculum which facilitates communication between students English and Brazilian.
Also gathered with the British the municipal secretary of Education, Roberlayne Borges Roballo, the Media Gladimir Birth in addition to members of the staff of the department of elementary education and the director of the department of Social Media Marcos Giovanella.

Bem vindos a Curitiba
We arrived into Curitiba on Tuesday night after travelling for around 23 hours and three time zones. Our first few days in the city have been to explore by foot and find out about our new home.
We've also met some people along the way including an American guy who is getting married this Wednesday, an English teacher from Birmingham who has lived here for ten years and an English teacher from Cambridge who loves British things.
The people of Curitiba have been extremely friendly and it's seems to be a general trait of the Brazilian population. We stand out massively when we are walking around the city, but once people realise why we are here maybe the Portuguese will be put into use!
